Healthy Eating and a Wealth of Knowledge

WHU Toddlers caretaker becomes “gourmet ambassador”

WHU Toddlers, the daycare center at WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management, has a lot to be excited about. Recently, the center has integrated a new culinary aspect to its childcare concept, with caretaker Meggie Korb recently completing Ich kann kochen!, a program for educators offered by the Sarah Wiener Stiftung and insurance agency BARMER. During her training, she learned how to get children excited about a balanced diet and healthy meals. Today, she can call herself a certified “Genussbotschafterin,” or “gourmet ambassador.” And the fact that small children often show an interest in the topic is only of benefit to her daily work. “Children are curious by their very nature,” noted Korb. “Most of them can’t wait to explore the wide world of food with all their senses. At WHU Toddlers, our team wants to take the kids by the hand and ease them into that world.”

Ich kann kochen! gives participating educators a solid knowledge of the basics of cooking alongside children: What is possible for children to do and at what age? What influences eating behavior? And what role does culture play in the kitchen? Meggie Korb will take what she learned at the program and bring it to WHU Toddlers—and to the enthusiastic children in the center’s care. In doing so, she will help them develop a healthy relationship with food, discover new flavor profiles, and expand their palettes at an early age.

With its nationwide and free program, the Sarah Wiener Stiftung aims to teach young children about nutrition and promote their health. The program’s team of nutritionists teach educators how to spark a love of cooking in young children in a way that is safe and understandable to them.
