Dr. Vera Schweitzer Wins Koblenzer Hochschulpreis

WHU doctoral student researches modern job demands in the gig economy

There are many ways for employees to keep their spirits up, from having short chats with colleagues to watching funny videos while on lunch break. And when they do so, not only are they in a good mood, but they also perform better in their duties. Dr. Vera Schweitzer (Doctoral Program, 2023) has written her dissertation at WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management on the modern job demands in what is known as the “gig economy.” For her hard work, she has been awarded the Koblenzer Hochschulpreis [Koblenz University Award] by local economics and science committee the Wirtschafts- und Wissenschaftsallianz Region Koblenz e.V. (WWA).

“This award reaffirms the relevance of my research and acts as a source of personal motivation for me to continue contributing to the field with practically oriented and scientifically sound research,” said Dr. Schweitzer following the award ceremony, held at Koblenz’s historic town hall on November 27, 2024. “It was great to look back at my time at WHU and celebrate this achievement. It was nice to see how much care the WWA put into organizing the ceremony.”

The WWA annually honors eight local academics for their outstanding works—all of which spark innovation within the Koblenz region. The alliance’s goal is to strengthen the region as a center of business and to maintain qualified, young talent. The Koblenzer Hochschulpreis is endowed with a grant worth €2,500. “Our goal with this award is both to acknowledge the competence of our younger academics and to highlight the strength of the universities we have here, with their diverse study options and ambitious research activities,” noted Dr. Stefan Wehner, President of the University of Koblenz and WWA Chairman.

Their members—active in economics and sciences, as well as in the Koblenz Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the Koblenz Chamber of Crafts—aim to promote the region as a center of innovation and to strengthen the connection between universities, policymakers, the corporate world, and the community.
