Numerous residents of Vallendar generously donated—and now WHU has handed over several pairs of glasses to aid initiative Brillen Weltweit
Across the world, access to corrective lenses is not a guarantee. As things stand, even today, eyeglasses are still considered a luxury in many developing nations. To help address this issue, the Campus Lions Club Vallendar WHU recently launched a donation campaign. And with some 350 pairs of secondhand eyeglasses collected, that initiative has proven itself a major success, thanks to the strong support of the local community.
Donation boxes were set up at the reception desk at WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management and at the local branch of the Sparkasse in Vallendar. The goal was to gather as many glasses as possible and pass them on—refurbished and ready for use—to people in need across the globe.
“Getting involved always pays off. Sometimes all it takes is to act, get hands-on, and do good,” says Heike Hülpüsch, President of the Campus Lions Club Vallendar WHU. “With this eyeglass donation drive, we’re giving people with vision problems a chance at a better quality of life.”
The collected glasses were recently handed over to Carlo Wagner, head of the nonprofit initiative Brillen Weltweit [Glasses Worldwide]. Wagner and his team professionally repair the glasses before sending them to nonprofit organizations around the world. These organizations then distribute the glasses at clinics, hospitals, and mission stations.
In donating their glasses, the generous contributors not only helped people in need of vision correction; they also contributed to reducing global waste and supported job creation, thereby helping long-term unemployed individuals in Germany.
