On Humanity in Tough Decision Making
Leadership begins where certainty ends. For WHU Professor Martin Fassnacht, this boundary is not a warning line — it is the place where character, clarity, and responsibility take shape. These principles guided his message to the WHU MBA graduates at the 2025 Graduation Ceremony in Düsseldorf, where the Part-Time MBA Class of 2024 honored him with their Best Teacher Award.
The ceremony, held on May 16, 2025 at the CCD Congress Center Düsseldorf, brought together the graduating cohorts of the Online, Part-Time, and Full-Time MBA programs at WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management. In his address, Professor Fassnacht chose not to focus on achievements, but on what it means to lead when decisions become difficult — and when the consequences are real.
He began by acknowledging the transition the graduates were entering:
“You are now looking for your next steps. You are becoming more senior in your career – whether you work in a corporate environment, in a small or mid-sized company, or are building your own business. You already have a wealth of knowledge on how to move forward. But you will realize that many decisions are not win-win. The idea of a permanent win-win is not reality. Tough decisions are trade-off decisions – and in those moments you must demonstrate leadership grounded in knowledge. You cannot please everyone.”
From there, he connected the idea of trade-offs directly to marketing and strategic management:
“Marketing is not about pleasing every customer. Marketing is about satisfying your target group in the appropriate way. That means you will not be liked by everyone. When you make tough decisions – when you cut costs, when you act strategically – these decisions are not made because they are easy, but because they are necessary for the sake of the company.”
The heart of his message focused on humanity in leadership, especially in a time of economic pressure and rising uncertainty:
“In tough decisions, you must respect your team members and communicate in a very transparent way. You must uphold the dignity of others – especially when the stakes are high. Humanity does not make you weaker. Humanity makes you even stronger. Because the really excellent leaders are not defined only by what they achieve, but by how they achieve it. And if you think long term, the how – acting in a human and responsible way – can also lead to better results for the company.”
Professor Fassnacht closed his remarks with a call to combine strategic clarity with personal integrity:
“Be strong. Lead wisely. Take bold decisions with clarity – and lead with a lot of heart.”
The Chair of Strategy and Marketing extends its warmest congratulations to all graduates of the Online, Part-Time, and Full-Time WHU MBA programs of 2024. Their commitment, curiosity, and engagement have shaped a learning environment defined by insight, dialogue, and ambition.
Professor Fassnacht expresses his heartfelt gratitude to the Part-Time MBA 2024 cohort for this distinction, and to all graduates for the trust they placed in his teaching.
